Minutes for the meeting of the Guild

Minutes for the meeting of the Guild December 3/2014

We did not have show and tell-we had Pot luck so had lots of food to eat.

We started at 6 with the pot luck and then at 7pm:

Kathy McDonald and Anne Fiddick conducted a discussion on our Mid Island Weavers and Spinners Guild Sale which is to Be Saturday March 21/ 2015
at the Cedar Community Hall 9:30 to 3:30
Some discussion on ending at 3?

It will cost us $150 Anne made the motion to spend the $150 for the hall and Crystal seconded it.

The tables will be $30 and non refundable.

Set up time 8 am and open at 9:30 We had a motion to go until 2pm. Betty made the motion and Julie seconded it.

We may have the quilt batts from Birkland Brothers. If we do we will have them at the sale and have a silent auction with sealed bids. Minimum bid $25. Highest bid gets it. Kathy made the motion for having a sealed bid and Crystal seconded it.

The Guild will have two tables-one for information and for the batts and the other will be for a Guild table that will take commission on what we sell.

We had a discussion about it being open to all or otherwise fibre related. I think we decided that as longs people knew that it was fibre related and the customers would be fibre related people it was okay.

We will need at least two tables for food. Guild members can provide the goodies.

World Wide Knit In Public Day

World Wide Knit In Public Day takes place June 14-June 22 this year. Now, you might think, “Why do I need a holiday to knit (or crochet) in public?” The reason is that in many peoples’ brains, knitting  and crocheting still reside in a section labeled “old fashioned.” Believe it or not, 10-15 years ago, people were actually ridiculed for pulling out their yarn, needles and hooks in public and they hesitated to do it.
We’ve come a long way. But we’re not there yet.  I was knitting at an airport a couple of weeks ago and a man watching intently spoke up after a while and said, “I haven’t seen anyone do that since my grandmother.”  The man was in his 60s! I wanted to ask him where he’s been but obviously, he hasn’t been anywhere where he has seen people who don’t look old fashioned knitting or crocheting in public.
That’s where you come in.  Make your presence known. Promote your hobby on the train, the subway, the airport, the doctor’s office, the beach, the park,  the hockey game, the local coffee shop or bar. You know how great it is that you have this craft.  It helps you relax. It offers you the opportunity to give meaningful gifts. It allows you to be creative and productive in a tangible way.  Go out. Knit in public.  People will talk to you and you’ll have an opportunity to tell them what they’re missing.
Visit World Wide Knit (&Crochet) In Public Day’s Facebook page to find or lead a group and use the hashtag #wwkipday to find information and share images and info about knitting in public.
Then, let us know how it goes.  We’d love to hear your stories!

Colour Control in Spinning

Tired of getting mud when you spin multicoloured roving? Sometimes you might get a pleasant surprise but wouldn't it be much more satisfying to spin with confidence that your finished yarn will be exactly what you want? After working with various combinations of colours and spinning techniques, you will begin to find your stride.
Chain [Navajo] plying, striated roving, painted roving, sprinkle dyed roving will be just some of what will be explored.

Only 4 spaces left! The guild is hosting another spinning workshop Colour Control in Spinning by Cheryl Wiebe. $90 for Guild members with $50 deposit due at the Apr 2nd Guild meeting, $120 for non-members. Space is limited and priority goes to Guild Members. To register contact Kathy cedarweaver@gmail.com
